FASTING & PRAYER GUIDE

Join us for a guided prayer & worship gathering at 6:30, Nov 30th to ask that God would have His way in and among us through this season. You will be free to pray individually, or in clusters. Please also consider spending the 24 hours prior (starting Wed evening, the 29th) in fasting and prayer. For all that is needed, let’s begin by agreeing in prayer.

Fasting Options
Traditional: Abstaining from food throughout the fast
  • Nothing but water, or
  • Fluids only, or
  • Specific limitations (fruits/vegetables only, etc.) or
  • Skipping a particular meal & not eating until the next, or
  • Abstaining from caffeine, sweets, pop, junk food, etc.

Other Options: Abstaining from something else that your system is conditioned to crave or expect throughout the day:
  • Personal electronics (no “screens” except for work)
  • Social Media, Music in the car, Podcasts, etc.
  • Vices, such as smoking, etc.

Why Fast?
  • It facilitates prayer
  • The craving acts as a reminder to pray
  • The time those things take is used for prayer instead
  • It increases fervency. We feel and pray from heart needs instead of silencing them with outer comforts.
  • It increases our ability to hear and accept God’s will
  • Despite the discomfort & initial grumpiness, we are more alert to God -
  • sharper and better able to hear Him - than when sated with other things
  • It increases our ability to surrender to what God wants to do. This one “no” to the flesh is empowering. We find that we can lay down our will for His, in acceptance or in obedience.
  • It is a thrust into the spiritual realm that displays the power of God in our lives, and strikes a reverberating blow against the powers of darkness by declaring tangibly - not just in word, but in action - that His will is the ruling authority in our space. By resisting our flesh, we serve notice that in Christ, we wield spiritual authority to resist other powers as well.
